Aryabhatta was born in 476 A.D. in state of Kerala. When he was still a young boy he had been sent to the University of Nalanda to study astronomy. He made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. He also propounded the Heliocentric theory of gravitation, thus predating Copernicus by almost one thousand years. Aryabhatta was the first one to have propounded this theory in the 5th century. Another Indian astronomer, Brahmagupta estimated in the 7th century that the circumference of the earth was 5000 yojanas. A yojana is around 7.2 kms. Calculating on this basis we see that the estimate of 36,000 kms as the earth's circumference comes quite close to the actual circumference known today.
Never the less in modern days also IINDAIN SPACE RESEARCH ORGANISATION (ISRO) is far ahead than NASA in many aspects. If we see Mangalyan ( Mars mission) happened. The achievement was not only to successfully send a satellite to Mars, but to do so on their first try. We spent only $75 million. The Americans spent $683 million, or nine times more. Since ISRO’s world record of launching whopping 104 satellites in one go, every person are some examples. I am not comparing two agencies. But trying to explore the capabilities which were aready there in the olden times and scopes in present days. Unfortunately we didn’t use those talent and knowledge to move in more positive direction to develop indginous technologies .. Still we are progressing slowly we will do much better that before ....JAI MAA BHARTI
